Understanding the butterfly life helps to understand the butterfly garden

I started to think more about the butterfly life as my appreciation grew for the beauty of them.

We begin to develop an understanding of the development of the butterfly. Included in this topic are butterfly host plants.

Scroll down to the bottom for a tip when starting a garden and taking into consideration host plants and butterfly bedding.

We start with the life cycle of butterfly. The butterfly metamorphosis has four stages. These four stages are...
  • The Butterfly Egg Stage
  • The Butterfly Larva Stage

  • The Pupa Stage
  • The Adult Stage

When butterflies mate it happens quickly into their adulthood. The life span of a butterfly mostly averages about a month.

For the blend of many other species, life can be only a week up to a year. Those that do live over nine months seek safe shelter and hibernate for the winter.

Although the more commonly known term is host plants, a host plant, can also come in the form of a tree or bush as well.

We list here more common types of butterfly hosting plants, many which you may be familiar with. You may even already have a few in your yard already.

When planning a garden one tip is to consider placing some of these hosting plants away from each other, even to the outer perimeters of your property. This way when the caterpillar starts to feast, the result of holes in your leaves is less noticeable.
