If Hinckley rings a bell for those less familiar there's good reason. This quaint, small town is host to part of the Akron and Cleveland Metroparks. Enjoy a day of swimming and boating at Hinckley Lake and don't forget, Hinckley is also home to the nationally famous Buzzard Day.
Well, word is getting around...
Another sight-seeing desti-
nation is the old Volkswagon Beetle converted into a huge flower planter at GreenSmith's Garden Center.
"As word spreads about this gigantic flower pot more people come with their cameras to
Catch the Planting Bug"
states the owners,
Jon and Kristyn Kolozvary.
After catching the bug your eyes are drawn into all the pretty flowers throughout the garden center. Drawing your eye up are many great outdoor decorations to. If you are looking for a topiary, metal or outdoor wood sculpture along with other garden or patio decorations you'll find them here.
When you start looking at flowers that attract butterflies for your
garden it is important to know that both the nursery and landscaping sells
only flowers, trees and shrubs that are grown locally in Ohio.
This sets GreenSmith's apart from many other Ohio nurseries.
Many other plant nurseries purchase from growers throughout the United States. If, for example, perennial plants were grown in Tennessee they are conditioned to survive in plant hardiness zones warmer than Ohio. Once planted and introduced to an Ohio winter, it is very common for those plants to die or struggle for years after being planted.
Jon points out that when attention is given to the plant hardiness for specific areas, less money is spent in the long run and a butterfly garden will establish itself and grow faster. This alone has brought back many happy, repeat customers. Both for the garden center and those seeking out reputable Ohio landscapers.
This is confirmed by the fact that The GreenSmith Landscape Company has received the Super Service Award from Angie's List since 1999!
Jon and Kristyn welcomes all who are looking for great butterfly plants to their garden center. Some flowers to attract butterflies that are high on their list of suggestions are:
- Coneflowers (Echinacea sp.) - Care-free and blooms from spring through fall.
- Bee Balm (Monarda sp.) - Blooms starting late summer through fall.
- Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia) - Care-free and blooms late spring. Keep cutting back after blooms are spent - don't cut back in fall.
- Catmint (Nepeta cataria) - Pest free and practically maintenance free. Blooms in early summer.
For Butterfly Bushes they also carry a variety:
- Butterfly Bush Tri-color (Buddleia davidii tricolor) - A beautiful combination of White, Pink and Purple blooms.
- Black Night Butterfly Bush (Buddleia davidii black night) - Rich, Dark Purple blooms.
- Lo & Behold, AKA: Blue Chip Butterfly Bush (Buddleia davidii blue chip) - Grows smaller, up to 36" and often used for decorative, container flowers Bluish-Purple blooms.
- Butterfly Magic Butterfly Bush (Buddleia davidii butterfly magic) - Combination of three colors per container. Red, Purple-Pink and White.
If you are not a big Butterfly Bush fan, great alternatives you'll find are:

- Hydrangeas
Expert Gardening Advice:
Jon states it is commonly recommended when spring breaks in March and April to cut back and trim plants and shrubs. This isn't always the case when developing a butterfly garden.
For those dormant butterfly pupa that will be an emerging butterfly in spring "do as less trimming as possible allowing the plant to grow on it's own". Cutting back early will take away early blooms which is needed food for early spring butterflies.
After early spring flowers have finished blooming start to cut those back. In the long run your gardens will still have a well maintained and manicured look.
